    Tell Me About the 616-8A

This duplex appears to use the 411-8A frame and cone.

Were any of you folks aware of the 4 inch alnico motor?

Anybody "hifi" a pair of these?

Claimed sensitivity of 100db, wonder what kind of BW that's across?

Bowtie my info is a JBL guy worked at Altec a short time. This thread seems to confirm my understanding, essentially a JBL LE-15 with an Altec small format on the back.

    http://www.hostboard.com/forums/f700...g-speaker.html

Only ever heard one set, seemed to go lower than 605's which I heard at same time.

Not common but good units if in good shape.

Thanks OG! There's a lot of historic info in that short little thread.

Now the only question is, how many is this fella selling?

    H'mm...looks quite promising!

Unfortunately, thanks to bowtie427ss I already blew my Altec budget for the month! ;oP

I'm afraid mine's gone for the next few months, i left behind a pair of D120's for 50 bucks because then and there it was fifty "ain't gots". Don't worry, they're just re-conable cores, and probably still available. Had they been clean and working, i'd have whore'd myself for them.

But, i'm gonna damn near cry if he's asking 299 for a PAIR of those 616's.

The bright side is that the parts list for straightening this mess out should be chump change, and hopefully a nice sonic reward for the effort. Before i begin my quest, does anybody know of a schematic online?

My biggest challenge is going to be dealing with the hole where that toggle switch is. Any suggestions?

A Power light? It would be kind of an odd spot, but maybe no one would question it since it would be functional.

Problem is it already has a pilot lamp smack in the middle above the volume knob.

I've just about completely cut it off with the camera angle, but you can see the very back of the lamp socket and the wires exiting it.

This is also missing the front top cover.

    Perhaps a re-chassis altogether?

Sorry Tom ,but you would have as hard a time as me collecting $50 for such "services."

Power light sound like a good idea. Neon, of course, or maybe amber beveled jewel. Might have some if ya need em.

What does the toggle switch do?

Main problem I had with that series of Altec is that sometimes there is not much room under the chassis.
Are the coupling caps mylar or plastic encased paper?

I thought that looked like the back of a light socket in the inside shot, but I couldn't locate it on the front panel shot. How bout an off light :-P

Would you have any reason to want a 1/8" stereo jack on the front panel?

I'm afraid you're probably right Joe. I can't wow em with brilliance anymore. So, i have to try to baffle em with bulls@#$.

I really haven't had the time to dig into this yet. with the "things" i see up top, i'm sure there's some laughs waiting on the underside.

I think the switch is mains power, and the unit was originally switched by the volume pot. I have yet to take a close look at it. The volume pot has some newer wiring connected making me think there was a total replacement at some point.

I really wonder if this might be a good candidate for a total re-chassis?
